How much do pallets cost? Prices by grade, size and state

What a pallet costs this month: every grade at 48x40 delivered by the truckload, by state and size from the PFX index, and why catalogs charge more.

Updated November 1, 2026 · 5 min read · By the Pallet Forecast desk

A recycled Grade A 48x40 pallet costs $7.95 delivered by the truckload in September 2026, and Grade B $5.00. Every other grade, new included, is on the same board (every grade in your state: free with an account). Those are PFX prices. PFX is the U.S. pallet price index: two benchmark grades are measured every month from completed truckload sales, and every other price is set by fixed spreads to those two benchmarks.

What you pay comes down to four things: the grade, the size, where the pallets are delivered and how many you buy at once. This guide walks through each one with this month's numbers.

Prices by grade

Pallet, 48x40 Delivered by the truckload
Recycled Grade B (#2) $5.00
Recycled block (9-block) free with an account
Recycled Grade A (#1) $7.95
Recycled AAA (premium) free with an account
Combo (new and recycled parts) free with an account
New stringer free with an account

Every price includes freight to your dock. Heat treatment to the ISPM 15 export standard adds a flat amount per pallet on any grade; heat-treated prices are on the board with a free account.

Grade B has visible repairs and suits floor storage and one-way loads. Grade A has no stringer repairs and runs on racks and conveyors. A combo pallet is built from new and recycled parts, so PFX prices it as the average of AAA and new. See pallet grades explained for what each grade allows.

Prices by state

Delivered prices move with local costs: pallet-industry wages, yard land, diesel and how far pallet demand outruns local supply. This month the PFX blend of Grade A and Grade B, delivered by the truckload, runs from $5.75 in Arkansas to $7.57 in Massachusetts.

Grade A and Grade B for every state are on the prices by state page, free. Every grade in your own state is free with an account.

Prices by size

Sizes scale with the lumber in the pallet, so a bigger pallet costs more: a new 48x48 costs more than a new 48x40, and a 42x42 less. Recycled grades come in the common stringer sizes, and new pallets add the two export sizes. Every size, nationally and by state, is in PFX Pro.

Why do pallets cost $40 or more online?

Catalogs sell new pallets 5 to 20 at a time and ship them by parcel or LTL, so each pallet carries handling and freight. By the full truckload, a recycled Grade A is about $7.95 delivered this month (PFX), and a new 48x40 stringer pallet costs more (its PFX price: free with an account).

Buying less than a truckload

The PFX prices above are for full truckloads. Under a truckload, the price per pallet is usually higher, because the freight and handling are spread over fewer pallets. A standing weekly order usually prices better than a one-time load. The bulk buying guide covers how to write the spec and compare quotes.

FAQ

How much does a pallet cost?

A recycled Grade A 48x40 costs $7.95 delivered by the truckload in September 2026 and Grade B $5.00, by the PFX index. New and the other grades are free to see with an account.

Why do new pallets cost more than recycled ones?

New pallets are mostly lumber, so hardwood and softwood lumber prices drive them directly, then labor and freight. A recycled pallet is a used pallet that needs only sorting and repair.

How often do pallet prices change?

PFX publishes every month, two business days after the BLS producer price release. The release calendar lists the dates.
